Axmen defeat Otterbots in series opener

The Kingsport Axmen beat the Danville Otterbots, 6-1, on Tuesday night.

After a scoreless first inning, both teams scored a run each in the second. The Axmen (19-5) run came on a Kyle Booker RBI groundout that scored Corbin Shaw.

Kingsport starter LHP Ryan Kraft (3-0, 0.86 ERA) struck out the side in the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, Sam Petersen hit his second inside-the-park home run of the season, scoring home Aaron Casillas and himself.

No runs were scored in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Axmen scored an insurance run on a Nick Block RBI single. Block went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Kingsport had a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning. The Axmen added two more runs on a Corbin Shaw RBI groundout and a Booker solo home run.

The Otterbots (13-11) stranded two runners in scoring position in the ninth inning and the Axmen secured the five-run win.

Ryan Kraft picked up his third victory of the season and continues to dominate on the mound for Kingsport. He threw five innings, allowed one run, five hits, no walks and struck out five. Kingsport’s bullpen threw four scoreless innings, allowed two hits, no runs, two walks and recorded three strikeouts.
