Flyboys complete series sweep over Axmen with walk-off victory

The Kingsport Axmen rallied to tie the game in the ninth inning Friday night, but they fell to Greeneville in an 8-7 walk-off loss.

Kingsport got off to a hot start offensively. The Axmen scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Corbin Shaw hit a two RBI triple to score home Jake Perry and Nate Anderson. Corbin Shaw scored home on a passed ball to make it a 3-0 game.

No runs were scored until the bottom of the third, when Greenville third baseman David Bishop singled home two runs to cut the Kingsport lead to one.

The Flyboys (10-11) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Axmen regained the lead on a Nick Block RBI single in the top of the fourth.

No other runs were scored until the bottom of the eighth. The Flyboys scored four runs, three of which came on home runs given up by Axmen relief pitcher Isaac Gonzales in back-to-back at-bats. Greenville had a 7-4 lead, entering the top of the ninth.

The Axmen (16-5) scored three runs while down to their last out in the ninth inning. Perry hit a two-RBI single to score home Aaron Casillas and Ian Riley. Down to their last strike of the game, the Kingsport Axmen scored the game-tying run on a Shaw RBI single.

With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Flyboys scored on a walk-off fielder’s choice.

Shaw led the offensive onslaught for Kingsport, going 3-for-5 with three RBI, two singles, a triple and a run scored.

The Axmen visit the State Liners in Bristol on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
