Axmen lose in heartbreaking fashion in back-to-back games

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Johnson City Doughboys walked it off in a 12-11 win over the Kingsport Axmen on Thursday night.

Johnson City (12-14) scored the first six runs of the game in the bottom of the first and the Axmen (19-7) responded with one run of their own in the top of the second on a Payton Allen solo home run.

The Doughboys added two more runs in the bottom of the third, making it an 8-1 ballgame. For the second night in a row, Kingsport trailed by seven-plus runs.

In the top of the fourth, the Axmen scored two runs. Corbin Shaw hit a triple off the center field wall to score Ian Riley and then Shea McGahan scored Shaw on a groundout. This was the first of three straight multi-run innings put together by the Axmen.

In the top of the fifth inning, Kingsport brought home two more runs. In the top of the sixth, the Axmen took their first lead of the game, 9-8, on a Mayes White two-run double. Kingsport then scored eight unanswered runs to jump in front.

The Doughboys would soon respond with three runs, which were scored on a solo and two-run home run. Johnson City had an 11-9 lead, entering the top of the seventh inning.

The seventh was the only inning in which neither team scored.

The Axmen cut the lead in half on an eighth-inning Shea McGahan RBI double, making it an 11-10 game. Kingsport scored the game-tying run in the top of the ninth on a Nate Anderson RBI double. Anderson is now on a 20-game on-base streak.

In an 11-11 game in the bottom of the ninth, Johnson City had the bases loaded with nobody out and the Doughboys won on a walk-off fielder’s choice.

Up next, Kingsport looks to split the series with a win in Friday night’s game at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.
