Kingsport splits doubleheader in Pulaski

PULASKI, Va. - The River Turtles won Game 1, 7-2, and the Axmen won Game 2, 16-9, in a twin bill Sunday.

In Game 1, the Axmen (30-14) held a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth, but the River Turtles scored six unanswered runs and won by five. Pulaski (21-24) scored all six runs down one with the bases empty and two outs.

In Game 2, the Axmen had a big lead early with a five-run first inning. Kendall Diggs singled home Nate Anderson, Kyle Booker hit a bases-clearing three-run double and Henry Hunter scored Booker on a fielding error.

The Axmen also scored two runs in the second and three runs in the third to take a commanding 10-0 lead over Pulaski. Payton Allen hit a two-run double, Sam Petersen hit an RBI single and both Anderson and Hunter scored on passed balls. Petersen is now on a 19-game on-base streak.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Kingsport kept pouring it on with a three-run fifth. Booker hit a 2-RBI double and Aaron Casillas doubled home Booker. Booker went 2-for-4 with two doubles, 5 RBI, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored in Game 2.

The River Turtles responded with their first five runs of the game, all coming against Kingsport’s newest pitcher Jake Timbs.

Kingsport fired back with two runs in the top of the sixth to regain a double-digit lead over Pulaski. Ian Riley tripled home Petersen and Riley scored on a Diggs RBI groundout.

Riley was the player of the series for the Axmen. He went 4-for-5 with his first triple of the season, two stolen bases, four walks and five runs scored.

Pulaski outscored Kingsport, 4-1, in the seventh, but the Axmen held on to win by seven runs.

The Axmen have two days off and return home Wednesday to take on Johnson City in a doubleheader.
