ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — Sometimes, when it rains, it pours — as was the case with Friday night’s matchup between the Tri-State Coal Cats and the Elizabethton River Riders.
Roughly an hour into the contest, which currently sits at 4-0 in favor of the hometown River Riders, officials suspended play due to lightning. The game will resume Saturday at a time to be announced.
Prior to the suspension of play, Elizabethton scored four runs fueled in part by six walks. Josh Owens broke the game open with the biggest hit of the night: a bases-clearing, three-run triple in the bottom of the second.
Starter Brayden Thomas struck out two batters in the first inning before running into trouble, allowing two hits, four runs and six free passes. Jack Gibson relieved Thomas in the second and ended the bottom frame with a strikeout.
When action resumes, play will pick up in the top of the third inning. Following the completion of the suspended game, the originally scheduled Saturday matchup will take place as part of a doubleheader.
