HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Saturday night at Jack Cook Field ended in frustration for both teams, as lightning forced Game 3 between the Huntington Slaw Dogs and Danville Otterbots to be declared a no contest in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied, 1-1. The result leaves both teams’ records unchanged, with Huntington sitting at 8-11 and Danville at 6-14.
Playing as the Huntington Slaw Dogs, their alternate identity for Saturday home games, the Coal Cats struck first in the third inning. Julio Solier reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing Sal Mineo home from third with a daring sprint to score Huntington’s lone run. Danville leveled the score in the sixth when Seth Smith singled to drive in Mason Pangborn.
Pitching was the story of the night, with both starters delivering strong outings. Huntington’s Brendin Oliver turned in five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, two walks and striking out five. Danville’s Andrew Evans was equally impressive, going five innings with four hits, one earned run, two walks and eight strikeouts.
While the game ended prematurely, the Taylor Swift-themed promotion ensured a lively atmosphere. The crowd embraced both the Slaw Dogs’ unique branding and the evening’s pop culture flair, staying engaged until the lightning brought an abrupt halt.
The six-game homestand wraps up Sunday as Huntington faces Danville in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. For more information about the Tri-State Coal Cats, visit appyleague.com/tri-state or follow @TriStCoalCats on X and Instagram.
