Logan Poteet becomes first Tri-State Coal Cat selected in MLB Draft

Tri State Name 16x9

A member of the inaugural 2024 Tri-State Coal Cats team, Logan Poteet was drafted by the Chicago Cubs selected in the 17th round of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft as the 511th overall pick.

Poteet was a member of the Charlotte 49ers in 2025. Before this, he was recruited out of Powell High School in Powell, Tenn., as the No. 2 catcher in the state in 2022. Poteet began his college career at Vanderbilt and then later transferred to UNC Charlotte.

During his summers, he spent his time playing for summer leagues. He played for two Appalachian League teams; Poteet played for the Kingsport Axmen during the 2022 summer season and later played for the Coal Cats in 2024. Not only did he play for two teams in the Appalachian League, but he also played in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Chatham Anglers.

As a member of the inaugural Coal Cats team, Poteet's defensive skills, strong throwing and receiving abilities, along with his extensive knowledge of the game, stood out on the field during the season. The backstop hit a three-run homer during his first plate appearance with the Tri-State Coal Cats. Throughout the remainder of the season, he showed great batting skills as well as catching abilities.

While with the Tri-State Coal Cats, Poteet had 79 at-bats, hitting .367 with a .480 OBP and .608 SLG. His most notable game with the team came against Bristol during a rain-shortened game where he went 3-for-4 with two RBI. By the end of the season, Poteet had 20 RBI in total.

Poteet started several games behind the plate for the Caol Cats. He caught three runners stealing, two coming in his first game with the club.

He earned a spot at catcher for the Appalachian League East All-Star team for the league’s 2024 All-Star game in Johnson City, Tenn., on July 23. After the season, he was selected as an All-Appalachian League Team member.

Poteet’s path from the Tri-State Coal Cats to being drafted by the Chicago Cubs reflects a series of impressive accomplishments. With even more accomplishments, dedication and development ahead, we expect to see him climb the professional ranks.

Congratulations to Logan — here’s to his accomplishments and hoping he is the first of many Coal Cats to wear a Major League Baseball uniform!
