DANVILLE, Va. — The Tri-State Coal Cats closed their six-game road trip on a sour note Sunday, falling to the Danville Otterbots, 8-4, at Dan Daniel Memorial Park. Despite a late rally, the Cats couldn’t overcome an early deficit, dropping their fourth game in six days.
Danville (4-12), building on Saturday’s win, found its offensive stride early and often, tallying eight hits. Charlie Carter led the way with five RBIs, including a grand slam, as the Otterbots surged to a 7-0 lead by the end of the third inning and never looked back.
Tri-State (6-9) struggled to generate offense, managing just four hits. Sam Winsett provided a spark in the fifth with a two-run homer, and the Cats added two runs in the seventh to make the score more respectable, but their comeback attempt fell short.
Danville starter Andrew Evans set the tone, allowing two runs over five innings while striking out five. Brooks Chamberlain made a strong season debut with a scoreless inning of relief, and then Tyler Davis closed the door late.
Tri-State’s starter Kenneth Jackson had a tough outing, lasting just over two innings and surrendering seven earned runs on five hits and four walks. Mason Child steadied the game with 2 2/3 innings of one-run ball, but the early damage was too much to overcome.
While the loss marked Tri-State’s seventh in its last nine games, the young season still offers plenty of time to recover. The Cats have shown flashes of potential, and a six-game homestand, including a four-game rematch against Danville, presents an ideal opportunity to build momentum.
The homestand begins Tuesday when the Cats return to Jack Cook Field to take on the Elizabethton River Riders at 7 p.m. ET.
