DANVILLE, Va. - The Danville Otterbots and Bluefield Ridge Runners played the finale of their two-game series at Dan Daniel Memorial Park on Wednesday. Otterbot pitchers threw 7 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball as Danville cruised to an 8-0 win.
The Otterbots were on the brink of history as they came close to throwing a no-hitter. Carson Cabbage broke up the no-hitter in the eighth inning with a single to left, but the pitching staff was in control and the offense came through when it scored seven runs in the final two innings.
The Players of the Game were the Otterbots' pitching staff for shutting out the Ridge Runners. Throwing nearly eight no-hit innings and striking out thirteen batters, the Bots' pitching staff had this game in firm control.
Starter Ray Ladd pitched two innings and struck out five of the six batters he faced. Cyle Phelan picked up the win, as he was great following Ladd, lowering his season ERA to 1.93. Zecheriah Gibson threw two scoreless innings and picked up a couple of strikeouts.
The Otterbots' offense scored seven runs and eight hits in the game's last two innings, sealing the deal as they swept the Ridge Runners and maintained their 3.5-game lead in the East Division.
The Otterbots will welcome the Tri-State Coal Cats for a two-game series. It will be the first time these two teams play each other this season. You can catch both games on Pixellot TV, with the pregame show starting at 6:15 p.m. and first pitch at 7 p.m.
