Appy League Pitcher of the Year 2024 Brock Toney

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Appalachian League announced that Greeneville RHP Brock Toney (Grand Canyon) was named the Pitcher of the Year. Toney was 1-0 with three saves and four holds in 14 relief appearances for the West Division champion Flyboys this season.

“Brock was the epitome of consistency for us this summer,” Flyboys manager Jack Wilson said. “He was the leader of our bullpen and gave us a chance to win every time he took the mound”

Toney, 21, finished the season with a 1.01 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings pitched (15.86 K/9). He allowed 13 hits, three runs (all earned) and nine walks, posting a 0.83 WHIP and .149 BAA. The right-hander ranked among the Appy League leaders in K/9 (1st), ERA (2nd), WHIP (2nd), BAA (4th) and strikeouts (5th). Among qualified relievers, Toney led the league in strikeouts and was second in innings pitched.

A late-inning bullpen staple for the Flyboys, Toney made seven consecutive scoreless appearances with 18 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings from June 21 to July 10. He went unscored upon across his three final regular-season outings, registering 15 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Toney tallied multiple strikeouts in 12 of 14 regular season appearances – including all eight games he pitched in July – and recorded a season-high seven strikeouts June 18 against Bristol and again in Burlington on July 19.

Toney faced the minimum on three occasions, highlighted by a pair of perfect two-inning, four-strikeout performances at Pulaski (June 21) and Johnson City (July 5). He completed more than one inning in 11 outings and at least two in nine appearances. Toney completed three innings three times for the Flyboys on June 18 against Bristol and then in back-to-back appearances against Pulaski and Burlington on July 16 and 19, respectively, earning the save in both games. He picked up his only win of the season on July 25 against the Sock Puppets after working 2 1/3 hitless frames with four strikeouts out of Greeneville’s bullpen.

In addition to Toney’s three regular-season saves, the right-hander recorded a save in the 2024 Appalachian League All-Star Game in Johnson City, Tenn., working a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to help the West defeat the East, 4-1. He was the Appy League’s Pitcher of the Week for the final week of the regular season (July 24-31) and its July Pitcher of the Month honors after going 1-0 with three saves, three holds and a 1.10 ERA in eight appearances for the Flyboys. He had a 0.92 WHIP over 16 1/3 innings, posting 28 walks against six walks.

A Kansas City, Mo., native, Toney made nine relief appearances as a Grand Canyon sophomore this year, recording 11 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings for the Antelopes.
