DANVILLE, Va.- In the first inning, it looked like it would be an entertaining game on both sides. Kingsport scored the first run of the ballgame, and Danville responded with two of their own in the next half inning.
As the third inning happened, wild sequences of events would tend to follow. Six runs were scored, but none of them came in play. Derrick Pitts led off for the Axmen, working a walk while Kam Durnin followed with one of his own.
Then, three of the next six batters were hit by the pitch offered to them. The inning ended after the Axmen sent 12 men to the plate. Otterbots’ pitching gave four walks, and five batters were hit.
In the bottom of the third, the Otterbots scored two, the score becoming 7-4. The fourth was 1-2-3 both ways. Landon Lorson shut down the Axmen in the fifth, who left the bases loaded.
Alex Conover came through in Danville’s half of the fifth, singling in Mason Pangborn to pull the Otterbots within two. Then they had their turn to leave the bases loaded.
After Kingsport scored twice in the sixth, Charlie Carter annihilated the second pitch he saw from Cooper Jones, shooting it 401 feet over the left field wall. The Otterbots came within three, 9-6, and that is as close as they got.
Kingsport’s pitching gave up one more run courtesy of another Conover single, but shut down everyone else. Despite striking out 11 batters, Danville suffered its 11th loss of the season. Danville looks to rebound at 7 p.m. Friday.
