DANVILLE, Va. - On Video Game Night at American Legion Field, the Bots beat the Greenville Flyboys, 11-10, in walk-off fashion on Friday night.

Saying the game was a "roller coaster" would be putting it nicely. The Bots and Flyboys went back and forth with different scores after the fifth inning.

Before then, Danville placed three of their first batters on base with left fielder Bruce Wyche delivering the RBI single to left field. The Bots held a 1-0 lead until the fifth, where the Flyboys plated six. It included two home runs, one of which was a grand slam by first baseman Ezra McNaughton.

The score was 6-1 before the Bots put together a three-run fifth. Shortstop Seth Smith began the inning off with a single. Third baseman Zach Altamura got on by a fielder’s choice and Smith was recorded out at second. Then, center fielder Elgin Bennett was hit by a 91 mph fastball by Flyboys’ reliever, Jake Kennedy. After that, Wyche contributed his third single in three at-bats to load the bases.

Designated hitter Garrett Shull came through on the third pitch of his at-bat, lashing a single to right field. Altamura and Bennett crossed, sending Wyche to third. In the following at-bat, right fielder Khaleel Pratt brought home the Bots' fourth run on a single of his own.

“These kids have never stopped playing hard,” Danville manager Mickey Tettleton said. “All year long. It was nice to see some things go our way for a change.”

In the sixth, both teams scored twice. However, the Bots’ two runs were louder than the other sides’. Altamura, on the sixth pitch of his at-bat, smacked a 378-foot two-run homer to left. His first long ball of the summer brought the Bots back within two.

“Everybody on the team contributed today,” Bennett said. “Everybody had a piece in this win...It was a good, heartfelt win.”

The heart of this Bots team has been tested. After being named the Appalachian League champions last year, they did not expect to be placed at the rear of the league this year at 11-19.

Despite these stats, catcher Antonio Cordeiro believed from the start that this team would not give up. Ever.

“Definitely not how we wanted this season to go, but going down early [in this game], we could have easily folded up,” Cordeiro said. “But we kept fighting back and fighting back. They [the Flyboys] did too. Pulling out this win means a lot. We look to keep this going in the next few games.”

Cordeiro contributed to the offense with two doubles, including an RBI in the seventh. In that same inning, Flyboys’ reliever J.D. Hay threw a wild pitch to score Pratt and tie the game at eight.

The Flyboys came out with two more in the top of the eighth off Bots’ reliever Justin Ritz. But once again, the Bots found a response. Shull doubled off of Hay to plate the Bots’ ninth run and advanced to third on a wild throw by Flyboys’ center fielder Reid Haire.

Bots' closer Tyler Davis shut down the first three batters he faced in the top of the ninth, then chaos ensued at the bottom of the final frame.

“Going up there, I’m just trying to get on for my team. I don’t care how,” Cordeiro said with a smirk.

He definitely got on and then some.

Cordeiro tied the game at 10 apiece as the first batter in the bottom of the ninth. His second homer of the year was launched 352 glorious feet. Pinch-hitter Charlie Carter was hit by a pitch and was later replaced by pinch-runner Jaxon Goldberg. Second baseman Mason Pangborn moved him over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Flyboys’ closer Jackson Krukonis intentionally walked Smith to invoke the forceout at third base. Krukonis then hit Altamura to load the bases.

Take a guess at what happened after that?

“I knew the guy at third could run,” Bennett said.

Goldberg, in fact, did not have to run. He trotted home on a walk-off walk by Bennett off Krukonis. The Bots celebrated behind second base minutes before fireworks illuminated the Danville sky.

“Obviously [Bennett] was looking for a ball to hit into the outfield,” Cordeiro said. “Maybe a sac fly. A ball in the infield. I saw the count was 2-0, then 3-0, and I was like yeah, we’re winning this game.”

Indeed, the Bots took home the wildest game of their season, improving to 11-19. The Flyboys fell to 17-12.

Danville will welcome Bristol for two games. The last time these two faced off, Danville swept them in three games. Game 1 will be played on July 12 with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. E.T.
