Danville Otterbots welcome Mark Martinez as 2026 manager

Danville 2026 manager announcement

The Danville Otterbots announced that Mark Martinez will take over as manager for the 2026 season. This will be Martinez's first season in the Appalachian League.

Martinez became only the fifth head baseball coach in San Diego State history, succeeding MLB Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn in 2014. He had previously served as an assistant coach for nine years under Gwynn.

Prior to coming to San Diego State, Martinez was an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico for 17 seasons, and an assistant coach at Mesa St. (Colo.) for five years, where he had previously played college baseball.

In 2023, Martinez was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year as San Diego State won the Mountain West regular season championship. Under Martinez, the Aztecs also won three Mountain West Tournament championships. In 2017, he became the fastest head coach in San Diego State history to reach 100 wins.

Martinez previously coached during summer ball in the prestigious Alaska Summer League for the Mat-Su Miners, as well as coaching for USA Baseball and at the MLB Draft Combine.

Martinez has a master's degree in sports administration.
